Transfer of Tregerddan residents to Hafan y Waun care home
Residents living at Tregerddan Care Home in Bow Street have moved into Hafan y Waun Care Home in Aberystwyth earlier this week. The move took place following weeks of in-depth discussions and consultation with residents, family, friends and staff at Tregerddan Care Home and various other stakeholders.
During August 2024, residents, staff, family and friends were invited to visit the facilities provided at Hafan y Waun, which includes en-suite bedrooms, designated communal spaces such as a café, activities room, and various lounges which help people to connect with each other, their visitors and the staff team.
The Care Inspectorate Wales inspected the Hafan y Waun Care Home in June 2024, and noted that ‘People are enabled to be as independent and as social as possible because the building is well designed. People personalise their own rooms as they choose. People use the different spaces available to do things they enjoy, for example, taking part in a wide variety of stimulating activities and interacting with each other, staff and visitors. The gardens are accessible and people can do things that matter to them.’
The report also noted that people have a voice and input into the running of the service, and that people appear very happy and content with the highly effective care and support they receive. Enthusiastic activities coordinators arrange a wide variety of pastimes such as aromatherapy, dance, gardening, poetry and themed events, and the well-designed gardens are used in warner weather for activities such as light gardening and ball games.
The responses from following the visits were extremely positive with some residents asking if they could move the following day!
Council officers have been busy ensuring arrangements were in place for a smooth transfer and discussing with residents, in order to ensure that all of their needs are met.
Eluned Evans, daughter of Phyllis Evans (Kinney), who lives at Hafan y Waun said: “We feel so privileged that she has been able to come here and so glad that the Council has taken over and is taking on board residents’ views about their own home, Hafan y Waun care home. Also, the residents’ families needs. I feel that we, as a family, that we are very lucky to have found Hafan y Waun and that mother is here.”
“Hafan y Waun isn’t just a care home, it is her home. The staff, I can’t praise them enough, they look after all of the residents with such care, kindness and attention and such respect for the people that they are.”
Councillor Alun Williams, Deputy Leader of Ceredigion County Council and Cabinet Member responsible for Through Age Wellbeing said: “I would like to thank all of the staff involved for their hard work and dedication in preparation for this move, and ensuring that the residents, their family and friends are consulted in order to identify their current and ongoing needs and priorities. I have visited the excellent facilities provided at Hafan y Waun, and hope that all of our residents will feel at home, and well-cared for by the excellent staff, and the support provided.”
The Council extends their thanks to the Friends of Tregerddan who have donated bedding to the residents who are moving from Tregerddan to Hafan y Waun. The Council look forward to working together further in the new year.
Thanks also to Transport for Wales for permitting the use of their car park whilst the transfer took place, allowing staff to safely transport furniture, equipment and the residents to Hafan y Waun.
